Background

  • Oil is the most valuable natural resource on the planet. It is the foundation of a modern economy.
  • America was built on cheap and plentiful oil. We were once able to produce all the oil we needed, but those days are long gone.
  • Our oil fields are old - most of our major oil fields were found before 1950 - and each year the production within these fields continues to drop. We've drilled hundreds of thousands of wells in the U. S. over the last century - and still our daily production continues to drop.
  • We import 60 percent of the oil we use, mostly from the Middle East. We import 14 million barrels a day at a cost of $300 billion a year.

The Challenge

  • China and India are growing rapidly and are demanding more and more of the world's energy resources.
  • Our foreign oil purchases contribute greatly to our unsustainable trade deficits.
  • The influence of unfriendly countries grows stronger everyday - and our ability to maintain our leadership position in the world is compromised by our need for foreign oil.
  • Our dependence on foreign oil directly threatens our economic health and national security.

The Problem

Our oil crisis is shrouded in misinformation, propaganda and hyperbole, preventing our elected officials from getting the support they need to make the right decisions.

The Coalition's goal

Build an educated and committed membership that will give our elected officials the support they need to make the decisions necessary to counter this threat.
